Introduction: Do We Have A Right to Exist?
Arguments for the Christian School

  • God’s REVELATION is the basis for all truth.
  • God gave PARENTS the responsibility to control the education of their children!
  •  God gave religious leaders a responsibility for TEACHING children.
  •  Christian education must be education for the WHOLE person.
  • God’s education is always in CONTRAST to man’s education.
  • Biblical education requires a submission of the intellect and will to the LORDSHIP of Christ.
  • Every part of the educational process is related to GOD:
    a) MATHEMATICS shows the order of God’s working.
    b) SCIENCE demonstrates the handiwork of God and declares His
    c) HISTORY and SOCIAL STUDIES show us the working of God in the lives of men and events in all ages and time.
    d) LANGUAGE and ARTS grant us the ability to communicate the truths of God to a lost world desperately in need of a saving gospel.
    e) Even through simple CLASSROOM and learning center RULES and PROCEDURES we teach submission to authority as ordained by God and love for Him and for one another.
  • Therefore, education cannot be divided into “SECULAR” and “religious.” It can take place only in an atmosphere where this relationship can be implemented.
  • The person to be educated is a UNIFIED personality. He is one as God is one. Therefore, his education cannot be compartmentalized into “secular”
    and “religious.”
  • The GOAL of all education, in church or school, is to help man more fully achieve the purpose of his life, that is, to know and serve God. Only the Christian school can eradicate the false dualism of “sacred and “secular” and bring the two together, thus presenting a unified Christian world view.
  • Higher academic STANDARDS in Christian schools possible because of devoted teachers, limited enrollment, and increased efficiency due to the wise stewardship of limited resources.
  • The SMALL percentage of time children spend at home and church
    reinforces the needs for the Christian school.

Why was family so important to the Jewish people?

i. Hebrew parents viewed children as ENTRUSTED to them by God, and received them as such into their households like divine APPOINTMENTS.

  • Such was the case when Israel was ENSLAVED by Egypt. (Exodus 1:11-14, 17)
  • They were forbidden to practice the SACRIFICING of children to idols. (Leviticus 20:2).

ii. The acceptance that it was a FATHER’S duty to take an active role in the instruction of children in the home.

  • Israel was known as a strongly PATRIARCHAL society.
    1. Abraham himself set the standard for GENERATIONS to follow. Genesis 18.
    2. Genesis 18:19 gives us a HINT.
  • The passing on of TRUTH was necessary for each succeeding generation;
    1. Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and then JOSEPH!
    2. Failures were MOSES and his sons; Eli and Samuel; David and Solomon.

iii. Education is dealing with TRUTH. Education is not dealing with the DISCOVERY of truth!

  • The educated one has to:
    1. ACCEPT IT – faith
    2. UNDERSTAND IT – mental awareness
    3. COMPREHEND IT – mental grasp of its implications
    4. APPLY IT in his life. – relate it in a personal way
    5. COMMUNICATE IT to the next generation. – make the truths relevant in a new cultural way

 

Each generation is only 1 away from failure!

 

iV. Education is dealing with the application of TRUTH to all areas of life, making it holistic in both attainment and APPLICATION.

 

So what is THE Prize, THE Goal we SEEK?

1. The main issue behind ALL of the problems that mankind faces is AUTHORITY.

2. Therefore, this PRIMARY truth that must be inculcated into the next generation is this principle!

3. Coupled to that is the concept of RESPONSIBILITY, and it must be taught so that there is a BALANCE understood by the student

4. To bring about the balance in the thinking and REASONING of the student both factual truths and reasoning abilities must be imparted.

5. Both ETHICAL and CRITICAL thinking or logic must be focused upon especially during latter parts of the educational processes.

  • We all think. We are uniquely ENDOWED to do so.
  • Inaccurate or “stinkin’ thinkin’ seems to be the MODEL for today.
  • Everything we accomplish, make or construct is directly affected by the QUALITY of our thought.
  • The quality factor of thought MUST be part of education and systematically developed.

Definition: Critical Thinking:

Criti cal thinking is the intellectually disciplined process of actively and skillfully conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and/or evaluating information gathered from, or generated by, observation, experience, reflection, reasoning, or communication, as a guide to belief and action. In its exemplary form, it is based on universal intellectual values that transcend subject matt er divisions: clarity, accuracy, precision, consistency, relevance, sound evidence, good reasons, depth, breadth, and fairness.”

A well cultivated critical thinker:
1. Raises VITAL questions and problems, formulating them clearly and precisely;

2. Gathers and assesses relevant INFORMATION, using abstract ideas to interpret it effectively

3. Comes to well-reasoned CONCLUSIONS and solutions, testing them against relevant criteria and standards;

4. Thinks open-mindedly within alternative SYSTEMS of thought, recognizing and assessing, as need be, their assumptions, implications, and practical consequences; and

5. Communicates effectively with OTHERS in figuring out solutions to complex problems.*

 

From the above, we can draw certain conclusions:

1. Most of society has a faulty or arbitrary means of determining what is RIGHT and wrong.

2. Only those who have a DEFINITIVE knowledge of ethics will be able to have a stable society. The alternative is “every man did that which was right in his own eyes.” (Judges 17:6; 21:5).

3. This will lead only to social and global DESTRUCTION as differing cultural groups vie for power and control.

4. Only those who can properly define “the HOPE that is in you” (1 Peter 3:15) will be able to impact the culture or the world in which they minister.

 

The hope of the righteous shall be gladness:
but the expectation of the wicked shall perish.
(Proverbs 10:28)

“When a wicked man dieth, his expectation shall perish:
and the hope of unjust men perisheth.”
(Proverbs 11:7)
