Displaying His Glory

Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the LORD is risen upon thee.  For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the LORD shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee.  And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising. Isa 60:1-3

Undoubtedly this passage is speaking of the future of Israel, God’s special people. This glory will come to Israel in future days when God’s grace will again bring to pass His promises to the earthly people of God. However, we notice the principle that people are drawn to light. Darkness dispels with fear and dread. Light attracts and brings life.  Plants turn towards the sun to draw from its life giving rays. Insects attract mates with flickering lights and ships are warned of danger with the flashing of lights on the shore.

God says that there is a glory in light that darkness cannot overcome. Darkness cannot overcome light, it is light that overpowers darkness!

In our passage we notice also the principle that the light was not of or from Israel, but from the Lord! Jesus, coming in the fullness of God’s glory, even though he came as a baby, brought light and hope to Israel.  John 1:4 says that “In him was life; and the life was the light of men.”

On that eventful night the dark Judean skies were filled with the bright lights of angels shouting “Glory to God” for the arrival of that LIGHT!  An embassage was on its way from heaven’s communication headquarters faster than 5G! “The Peacemaker is on His way!” The announcement that changed the world forever making life and relationship with God a new reality broke through the darkness.

This was not because of man’s doing; it was all of God! “the LORD shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee.”, said the prophet Isaiah. It is HIS GLORY which shall draw all men. In the realm of human enterprises we have our luminaries who draw the crowds. Stadiums are filled with fans; crowds throng to spectacles of artists’ performances. But this attraction is to the LORD of lords! His glory supersedes by quantum measurements.

What a thrill that we in our day and time can be indwelt by the God of the universe when we accept his offer of salvation. What a glorious truth to comprehend that he comes to live and wants to shine his Light through us, lighting our world in our human, clay fashioned bodies and feeble efforts. As we allow him to work in and through us, he empowers us to do above and beyond what we ever could imagine.

This season is a time of wonder. It is a time of amazement to realize that He became flesh, taking on humanity so that he could know the feelings of our infirmities and suffer what we suffer. Then and only then was he prepared to go to the cross and die for our sins so that we would never know the full torture of his judgment!

We MUST let His Light shine so that all can see what a tremendous gift he has given us. No wonder we can heed his call to
